At the heart of a safe workplace is a safe work team, and it is the supervisor that is the direct link between management and this team.

To inspire employees to operate in a safe manner requires the supervisor to apply good leadership skills on a daily basis. In the absence of good safety leadership, only a handful of employees will independantly participate and encourage other team members to act safely.

There are many components to creating a safety culture - not just a behavioural safety program. Where team members reinforce this atmosphere by questioning other team members about safety - especially casuals, contractors, and new employees - and participate in safety activities, the safety culture will improve and injuries will reduce.
